NCAA Season 93’s Best 7: Week 6

first_imgWith the collegiate season in full swing, INQUIRER lists the week’s top seven performers in the ongoing NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament. From their game statistics to their overall impact in the outcomes, everything is weighed to come up with the best players from the week that was.ADVERTISEMENT Renzo Navarro. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netHis numbers may not be as stellar as the others in this list, but Renzo Navarro’s overall impact for San Sebastian has been undeniable late in the first round.Forging a deadly backcourt combination with senior Ryan Costelo and sniper RK Ilagan, the transferee has seen an uptick in his minutes and he has capitalized on the opportunities.Navarro’s biggest contributions this week for the Golden Stags was his flurry late in San Sebastian’s 75-73 thriller over EAC on Friday, dropping all five of his points in the final minute to tow his side to the win.7. Clint Doliguez – F, San Beda Red Lions11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 stealLast Week: N/AClint Doliguez. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netIt’s tough to pick a standout for San Beda, especially after that barnburner of a win against Perpetual on Thursday. But we’ll go with Clint Doliguez, who once again found a way to shine despite the overall ugly showing from his teammates. The 22-year-old has shown signs of potential through the course of the season, and his latest outing is no different. It may only be a matter of time before Doliguez establishes himself as a reliable rotational player for the Red Lions. Rey Nambatac – G, Letran Knights19.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assistsLast Week: 4FILE PHOTO by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netRey Nambatac was the lone holdover from last week’s list.Nambatac’s double-double performance helped Letran rack up four straight wins to move up to the top four, but that streak could not topple the mighty Lyceum on Friday, 75-68.It shouldn’t come as a shock, too, that Nambatac was the focus of the Pirates’ defense, forcing the Knights to finish the first round with a 5-4 card.Luckily, Letran will have at least two weeks to assess things before gearing up for battle again in the second round.5. Jed Mendoza – G, JRU Heavy Bombers13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 stealsLast Week: N/APhoto by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netTey Teodoro may still be far from the playmaker coach Vergel Meneses is envisioning him to be, but Jed Mendoza has come to JRU’s rescue. The 21-year-old guard has taken the bull by the horn and has made the most of the opportunity given to him by his coach.Mendoza has been steady for the Heavy Bombers, doing it all to orchestrate the offense for his side, while also being a pesky on-ball defender. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Things are just looking up for this budding JRU star.6. Renzo Navarro – G, San Sebastian Golden Stags9.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists (1-1)Last Week: N/A Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes PLAY LIST 01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes00:50Trending Articles00:50Trending Articles01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games WATCH: Streetboys show off slick dance moves in Vhong Navarro’s wedding Read Next 1. Mike Nzeusseu – C, Lyceum Pirates13 points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocksLast Week: N/APhoto by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netIt’s easy to look at Lyceum as a CJ Perez-centric team. But on Friday, Mike Nzeusseu reminded every one what makes the Pirates the most dangerous team in all the NCAA.Facing a Letran squad with a depleted frontline, the Cameroonian big man had a field day in the paint, imposing his presence to help Lyceum survive its toughest test yet and come away with the 75-68 win.The face that the Pirates came back from a 17-point deficit without coach Topex Robinson at the sidelines is proof enough how disciplined this team is.ADVERTISEMENT That’s why it’s no surprise that Lyceum is still flying high in the standings at 8-0.2. Ervin Grospe – F, JRU Heavy Bombers16.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.5 assistsLast Week: N/APhoto by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netA couple of wins go a long way, and for JRU, stringing its first winning streak of the tournament means going as high as third place in the penultimate week of the first round. What makes the Heavy Bombers tick? It’s undoubtedly the stability provided by Ervin Grospe to the squad, earning him praises from coach Vergel Meneses. But the veteran forward’s task still isn’t over, as JRU faces a tough draw against San Sebastian and Perpetual. However, if the Heavy Bombers pass this test, it shouldn’t be hard for them to break out of their roller coaster ride of a season, let alone a spot in the Final Four.3. Prince Eze – C, Perpetual Altas17.0 points, 19.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocksLast Week: N/APhoto by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netLooking like the dominant Perpetual big men of old, Prince Eze is slowly earning his way among the ranks of his predecessors. With his consistent double-double showing, the Altas were able to snap out of their two-game losing skid with a 68-59 win over Arellano last Tuesday.Unfortunately, Perpetual needed more from him and his crew as the team lost to San Beda, 57-53 in its homecourt in an ugly and lowscoring game. There’s still positive signs, though, and if Eze could keep this up, coupled with the Altas marksmen hitting from their range, the Las Piñas-based crew could fully realize their potential as this season’s giant killers. CBI arrests Kalmadi over irregularities in CWG baton relay

first_imgSix months after the Commonwealth Games scam fiasco, former Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi has finally been arrested. The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Kalmadi over financial irregularities in the Queen’s Baton Relay in the CWG.Meanwhile, the Congress suspended Kalmadi following his arrest in the Commonwealth Games scam case. The decision was taken by the disciplinary committee of the party. The CBI on Monday questioned the Congress MP from Pune to clarify details before arresting him in connection with cases related to alleged irregularities in hiring AM Films and AM Car and Van Hire Limited during baton relay in London. The CBI team had spoken the London-based owner of both the companies — Ashish Patel — who has given a lot of information and documents with regard to the allegedly overvalued deal. The documents and records made available by Patel will be provided to the CBI officially in reply to their Letter Rogatory issued to British Authorities.CBI sources said the agency now wants Kalmadi to reply to the new pieces of information on the monetary transactions with the two companies. The CBI had already questioned Kalmadi earlier on the massive scam in the CWG and had also carried out searches at his homes and offices.Kalmadi has also the backing of the Congress party. Congress sources say appropriate action will be taken at the appropriate time against Kalmadi.Kalmadi will be produced in a Delhi court on Tuesday.Minister of State for Sports Ajay Makan will also ask the IOA to remove Kalmadi and elect a new president in his place.advertisementlast_img read more

Olympics: Bindra says winning at Olympics is a ‘lottery’

first_imgJust as Bindra, the lone Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics, and woman boxer Mary Kom unveiled the countdown clock for the London Games here on Wednesday they could not hide their excitement.Bindra may well have some of the best accomplishments in the sport but the ace marksman still looks at the London Olympics as a lottery.Abhinav Bindra”I must have pulled the trigger 30,000-40,000 times in my career so it might not be something different but, of course, it is the Olympics and just as anybody else it is a lottery for me as well,” said Bindra during a function at the British High Commissioner’s residence on Wednesday. The hype around the Olympics has already begun and Bindra said that he was as excited as ever to compete at the biggest stage of them all. With the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold already under his belt, Bindra was modest enough to admit that it took a lot of hard work for him to reach where he is today and said there was still a long way to go for him. ” I don’t think I was very talented and whatever I have achieved in my career it is all because of my hard work which I intend to continue. It was my sixth or seventh birthday when my parents gifted me a toy gun and from there on it has been a long journey.”But as far as the London Olympics are concerned I am really excited and it will be a challenging task to compete against the best shooters of the world. I have been working really hard but if I am not able to make it this time, I’ll look forward to 2016,” said Bindra with a grin.advertisementFor five- time world champion Mary Kom, the news that women boxing will also be a part of the Olympics, has given her an opportunity to stamp her authority in another major competition.Alongside the two Indian stalwarts were the British deputy High Commissioner Julian Evans and British Council director Rob Lynes who were probably as ecstatic as any other Englishman.”In the next 12 months, until the Games are over in London, we will be proud to justify that there couldn’t have been a better place to stage these Games as Nelson Mandela (former South Africa President) said in 2005,” said Evans. “Olympics are not just about games but engaging people for the Games as well. London has invested more than 9 billion and the venues are the best prepared to host the Games.”last_img read more
