KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC):World sprint champ-ions Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce have copped the major titles in the second annual Caribbean Sports Awards, organised by the Caribbean Sports Journalists Association (CASJA).Bolt was unanimously chosen as the sportsman of the year, beating Paralympic athlete Akeem Stewart of T&T and O’Dayne Richards of Jamaica (athletics). The Jamaican sprinter success-fully defended his titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August. The judges chose Fraser-Pryce for the sportswoman of the year from a list of 11 nominees, including runners-up Yarisley Silva of Cuba (athletics) and Alia Atkinson (swimming) of Jamaica.Fraser-Pryce continued her sprint dominance to win gold medals in the 100m and 4x100m in Beijing, including anchoring Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team in a championship record time of 41.07.
Former national Under-19 and Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) batsman Rasheed Outar has described the time it took him to score a century against Manchester CA in the second round of the Jamaica Cricket Association All-Island Limited Overs Championship at the weekend as “hard”.Outar, a former Jamaica senior team trials invitee, hit 115 to help pilot his team to a 27 runs win over Manchester at Up Park Camp. The soldiers, who were asked to take first strike, posted 293 for seven off their allotted 50 overs. Sean Bennett with 60 best supported Outar with 60 against Damian Bryce two for 50 off seven overs.Manchester, in reply, were then limited to 266 off 40.5 overs with Sherdon Allen getting 97 and sidelined national off-spinner Jamie Merchant 53.West Indies ‘A’ fast bowler Reynard Leveridge, who recently returned from Sri Lanka after picking up an injury, in returning to action, claimed four for 41 off nine overs, while Rayon Bennett finished with three for 46.”It is one of my hardest hundreds, as batting, it was not flowing,” stated Outar, who was dismissed in the 50th over while attempting to help his team set a bigger total.FINDING THE GAPS”I was not middling the ball with the bat most of the times, I was not finding the gaps that often, and it took a lot out of me.”As a matter fact, I had to run a lot of twos and threes, and scored only one boundary in the first fifty runs I made.”But I wanted the hundred, so I spent as much time at the crease as I could, and in the latter part of my innings, the runs started to flow.”The win was the second for the JDF in as many matches.Elsewhere, St Thomas got the better of defending champions St Catherine CC by 176 runs, Kensington defeated St Mary by seven wickets, Clarendon edged Melbourne by one wicket, St Catherine CA beat Lucas by two wickets, St Ann defeated Kingston and St Andrew by 81 runs, and St James overcame the challenge of Boys’ Town by five wickets. The Portland versus Trelawny encounter at Folly Oval was not played due to rain.
Two of the world’s largest drug companies are paying hundreds of millions of dollars to doctors every year in return for giving their patients anemia medicines, which regulators now say may be unsafe at commonly used doses. The payments are legal, but very few people outside of the doctors who receive them are aware of their size. Critics, including prominent cancer and kidney doctors, say the payments give physicians an incentive to prescribe the medicines at levels that might increase patients’ risks of heart attacks or strokes. Industry analysts estimate that such payments – to cancer doctors and the other big users of the drugs, kidney dialysis centers – total hundreds of millions of dollars a year and are an important source of profit for doctors and the centers. The payments have risen over the last several years, as the makers of the drugs, Amgen and Johnson & Johnson, compete for market share and try to expand the overall business. Neither Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, nor Johnson & Johnson have disclosed the total amount of the payments. But documents given to The New York Times show that at just one practice in the Pacific Northwest, a group of six cancer doctors received $2.7 million from Amgen for prescribing $9 million worth of the company’s drugs last year. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration added to concerns about the drugs, releasing a report that suggested that their use might need to be curtailed in cancer patients. The report, prepared by FDA staff scientists, said no evidence indicated that the medicines either improved quality of life in patients or extended their survival, while several studies suggested that the drugs can shorten patients’ lives when used at high doses. Tuesday’s report followed the FDA’s decision in March to strengthen warnings on the drugs’ labels. The report was released in advance of a hearing scheduled for Thursday during which an FDA advisory panel will consider whether the drugs are overused. The medicines – Aranesp and Epogen, from Amgen, and Procrit, from Johnson & Johnson – are among the world’s top-selling drugs, with combined sales of $10 billion last year. In this country, they represent the single biggest drug expense for Medicare and are given to about a million patients each year to treat anemia caused by kidney disease or cancer chemotherapy. Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, said that both patients and doctors would benefit from fuller disclosure about the payments. Still, the anemia drugs can help patients’ quality of life, when used appropriately, Lichtenfeld said.
Steve Nicol believes something has gone wrong at Liverpool as their tough start to the season continued with a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. The Reds have already lost four times this season, compared to last year’s six losses when they finished second in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on winning the title. And the former Anfield star believes manager Brendan Rodgers’ tactics and the club’s new signings have to come into question following their below-par beginning to the campaign.“To say they’ve been a disappointment is an understatement,” Nicol told Extra Time. “[This season] has been an absolute disaster. There is only one man missing from the squad they had last year and that’s Luis Suarez, everybody else is still there.“Something has gone wrong somewhere down the line. All this teamwork and all this chemistry they had last year has disappeared.“The biggest question isn’t about Brendan’s tactics, which are questionable. The biggest question is actually, who is making the decisions on the signings?“When you finish second in the Premier League and you have the amount of money Liverpool had to spend and you don’t spend it wisely that is the question I would be asking. Who signed these guys?”

He started for the first time in 10 months and he was one of the positives of the day,” he told Arsenal.com after the 1-1 draw with Hull at the Emirates.Gabriel is still a week away from returning, meaning he won’t get to face Barca, while Jack Wilshere is “three or four weeks” away, according to Wenger, while it is also too early for Santi Cazorla. 2
Crystal Palace are set to continue their summer spending spree by tabling an offer for Inter Milan full-back Davide Santon. The Italian defender worked under Alan Pardew for three years at Newcastle and the Palace manager now wants him back in the Premier League at Selhurst Park.Santon was a bit-part player for Roberto Mancini’s Inter last season, making just 12 Serie A appearances for the San Siro club.According to Sky Italia, Santon will be available on the cheap this summer and Palace are understood to be readying a £3m bid for the 25-year-old.Santon began his senior career with Inter before joining Newcastle in 2011, but his progress has stalled since he left St James’ Park. However, Pardew has apparently spoken to Santon and told him a move to Palace will help him regain a place in Italy’s national side. One of Donegal’s best-known animal charities has issued a warning after a number of bogus collections were carried out on its behalf. The collections were made in the Letterkenny area in recent days on behalf of Donegal Pet Rescue.A number of young women are believed to have called to housing estates carrying out door-to-door collections. However a spokesperson for DPR say they have not organised any such collection and believe people may have been acting illegally. The spokesperson warned members of the public that anybody belonging to Donegal Pet Rescue will most likely be wearing an official DPR vest and carrying ID.“Unfortunately it appears that this is not a legitimate collection, as they have not been in touch with our fundraising director with regards to this collection,” he said.It is not known how much money was collected during the bogus door-to-door operation. Donegal Pet Rescue was set up in 2000 to rehome abandoned cats and dogs across Co Donegal. It’s a non-profit organization which denies on donations from the public and its patron is Sir Gerry Robinson.
